|| Diplomatic Correspondent: Ambassador of the Netherlands to Bangladesh, Joris van Bommel, paid a courtesy call on Opposition Leader and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman MP at the Opposition Leader’s official residence on Minto Road in Dhaka on Tuesday morning.The meeting, held at around 10:00am, took place in a cordial and friendly atmosphere. The Dutch ambassador was accompanied by First Secretary (Political Affairs) Jowad Azawi and Senior Political Adviser Lubain Chowdhury Masum.During the meeting, the two sides held an open discussion on Bangladesh’s current political situation, democracy and human rights, as well as bilateral relations between Bangladesh and the Netherlands. They also discussed opportunities for greater trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.Dr. Shafiqur Rahman expressed appreciation for the Netherlands government’s various initiatives aimed at supporting Bangladesh’s economic development, addressing climate-related challenges and providing assistance to Rohingya refugees.The Dutch ambassador, in turn, praised the constructive and positive role of the opposition in parliament. He stressed the importance of political stability for Bangladesh’s development and investment prospects. He also emphasised the need for regular dialogue and discussion between the government and the opposition.Both sides expressed hope that the existing friendly relations between Bangladesh and the Netherlands would become stronger in the future through increased cooperation in areas of mutual interest.At the end of the meeting, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman accompanied Ambassador van Bommel on a tour of various graffiti related to the July movement displayed at the Opposition Leader’s residence.Opposition Leader’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Barrister Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem Arman MP and member of the Foreign Affairs Adviser Committee Ali Ahmad Mabrur were also present at the meeting.
