|| By Dayal Kumar Barua, President By ‘’From November 1, 1954, to November 2026, 72 years have passed since the start of one of the most significant and influential guerilla conflicts in modern history. Fought between the Algerian National Liberation Front (FLN) and France, this asymmetric conflict shattered the illusion of permanent European colonial rule and provided a revolutionary blueprint that reshaped the global geopolitical landscape.Unlike other post-WWII decolonization processes that were achieved through gradual negotiation, France viewed Algeria not as a colony, but as an integral department of France itself. Because of this, France deployed a massive force of up to 500,000 soldiers and used ruthless, modern counter –insurgency tactics. To counteract this huge force, the FLN adopted unprecedented urban guerrilla warfare (most famously during the Battle of Algeria). The FLN proved that a disciplined guerrilla movement could endure extreme military pressure, exhaust a global superpower, and ultimately win a political victory. The political cost of trying to suppress the Algerian Revolution Guerrilla movement was so severe that it shook metropolitan France to its foundations. The inability to manage the war caused the structural collapse of the French Fourth Republic in 1958. To prevent an outright civil war and a military coup by discontent generals, Charles de Gaulle was brought back to power, leading to the creation of the French Fifth Republic- the very system under which France is governed today. This achievement is a combination of a twofold effort. While the Algerians fought a guerrilla war on the ground, they simultaneously ran a sophisticated diplomatic campaign to systematically dismantle the legitimacy of French colonialism both locally and internationally. The internationalization of the Algerian matter at the United Nations in 1955 was a watershed diplomatic turning point that transformed a domestic colonial conflict into a global issue of decolonization. Initiated by The FLN’s diplomatic wing (and later its provisional government, the GPRA), this shift forced the ‘’ Question of Algeria’ ’onto the world stage, thus exposing France’s propaganda of its defense that defense that the war was strictly an internal affair. The FLN, supported by its worldwide allies framed the conflict through the lens of human rights and global anti-colonialism. The Afro-Asian Bloc: Algerian representatives achieved a massive breakthrough at Bandung Conference (1955). They successfully framed French colonialism as an anachronism- a dying, oppressive system that violated the rising global consensus on-self-determination. Leveraging Human rights: The FLN outmaneuvered France by announcing their own adherence to the Geneva Conventions. By inviting organizations like the Red Cross to inspect their prisoners, they framed themselves as a legitimate ‘’ state-in-waiting ‘’ while exposing France’s flagrant violations of international law. Exploiting Cold War Geopolitics: They convinced Western nations to keep their distance from France. The FLN argued that by supporting Paris, these countries were violating their own democratic principles.Within Algeria, the FLN described French colonialism as a brutal, alien, and illegitimate occupation built on racial discrimination and economic exploitation. They dismantled French legitimacy through several key framings. De-legitmisation French Authority: The FLN set up their own Parallel administration. They urged Algerian Muslims to bypass colonial courts, tax collectors, and schools, portraying cooperation with France as a betrayal of national identity. Highlighting Asymmetry and War crimes: Local FLN communicationheavily spotlighted French counter-insurgency tactics. By exposing the use of systematic torture, rape, forced displacement into ‘’ regroupement camps’’, and the destruction of over 8,000 villages, they framed the French military as un-civilized executioners rather than protectors. The Mythe of the ‘’ civilizing Mission’’: The FLN highlighted the sharp inequality between the one million European settlers (Pieds-Noirs) and the nine million colonized Muslims. They pointed to rigged elections and the denial of basic rights to prove that French ‘’ liberty and equality’’ were a lie reserved only for Europeans. This implacable situation led the Algerian people to wage a fierce resistance against France, which was one of the most powerful colonial empires of that time. Recognizing the unsustainable financial and political costs of fighting the FLN, France conceded independence to Morocco and Tunisia in 1956 and rapidly granted independence to nearly all of its remaining West African colonies by 1961 to prevent them from launching similar revolutions. France aimed to leverage its full authority over Algeria-invaded since 1830 for strategic, territorial, and resource-extracting purposes.‘’ Algeria’s War of National Liberation, which concluded 132 years of French colonial rule, is widely regarded as one of the bloodiest, more than 5.6 martyrs killed, and it stands as one of the most influential anti-colonial struggles in modern history. It not reshaped the geopolitical landscape of the global South but also profoundly transformed twentieth – century radical thought literature, and philosophy. By challenging the notion that a Western military superpower could permanently suppress a population demanding self- determination, the Revolution became an important catalyst for intellectual, political, and creative movement’s globally.Fanon’s Fanon experiences during the war inspired his seminal books, including The Wretched of the Earth, which analyzed the psychological effects of colonial oppression and defended violent resistance as a tool for liberation. His writing became a cornstone text for civil rights movements, anti-war activists, and anti-colonial revolutionaries across the globe for generations. Jean- Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir: Sartre became a fierce public defender of Algerian independence, writing the famous, radical preface to Fanon’s The Wretched of the Earth, mentioned above. Alongside, Simone de Beauvoir, he utilized the journal Les Temps Modernes to denounce the French military atrocities, systematic torture, and the moral degradation of the occupying power. The success of Algerian Revolution of November1, 1954 resonated deeply with global leaders who transformed these actions into political and military theory.Amilcar Cabral: The Bissau- Guinean anti-colonial leader famously declared Algiers the ‘’ capital of revolutions’’ in 1969, remarking that the ‘’ Christians make the pilgrimage to the Vatican, and national liberation movements to Algiers’’. Nelson Mandela: in 1962, Traveled to Algeria to receive crucial military training and ideological instruction from the FLN. The operational tactics and organizational resilience of the Algerian fighters heavily shaped the shift toward armed resistance in the South African anti-apartheid struggle. Che Guevara and Third –Wordlism: The revolution solidified Algeria’s status as a beacon of the Non-Aligned Movement and Third-World internationalism, drawing visits from figures like Che Guevera and cementing alliances across Latin America, Asia, and the Arab world. The Algerian War of Independence witch was ignited by the FLN on November1, 1954, stands globally as a definitive symbol of anti-colonial resistance. By launching their struggle with the historic Declaration of November, the Algerian people framed their fight not merely as a local conflict over territory, but as a universal demand for human dignity and the fundamental right to self-determination. The immense sacrifices made thought the war- culminating independence in July 1962-cemented the revolution as an enduring blueprint for liberation movements around the world proving that the collective will of people can successfully overcome oppressive global empires. Author: Dayal Kumar Barua, President of Institute of Global Studies
