Sports Desk: For the first time in World Cup history, the host nation Canada has earned a point. In a match held at the Toronto Stadium, Canada drew 1–1 against strong side Bosnia and Herzegovina, creating a new milestone on the World Cup stage for the North American country.
Previously, Canada participated in the 1986 and 2022 World Cups and played a total of six matches without earning a single point. However, by drawing their opening match in this World Cup on home soil, they have finally ended that disappointment.
From the start of the match, Bosnia played attacking football and were rewarded in the 21st minute. Forward Jovo Lukić scored with a header from a corner kick opportunity. It was the first goal of his international career. With no further goals in the first half, the Balkan side went into halftime leading 1–0.
In the second half, Canada pushed hard to equalize. After a series of attacks, the hosts finally found their desired goal in the 79th minute. Forward Cyle Larin’s excellent finishing brought Canada level at 1–1. In the end, neither team could find a winning goal, and both sides shared the points.
Meanwhile, before the match, disappointing news came for Canadian fans. One of the team’s star players, left-back Alphonso Davies, could not take the field due to a hamstring injury. He had not fully recovered from the injury sustained late in the club season, so he was left on the bench. It was later confirmed that he was ruled out of the match because of the injury.
Although it was a draw, the result is historic for Canada, as it marks their first-ever World Cup point, bringing new hope among the home supporters.
