Three Centuries of Saudi Statehood: Saudi Embassy celebrates founding Day 2026 in 1727 legacy

MM Rahmatullah: Saudi Arabia’s annual Founding Day on February 22 marks the birth of the first Saudi state in 1727, when Imam Muhammad bin Saud turned Diriyah into a hub of governance, security, and tribal unity. This milestone, now nearly 300 years old, underpins the Kingdom’s modern identity and political system, offering a vivid contrast to Saudi National Day, which celebrates the 1932 unification under King Abdulaziz Al Saud.

The Saudi Embassy in Dhaka celebrated the day in keeping with Arab traditions with an Iftar dinner. The day was officially inaugurated by His Excellency Dr Abdullah Zafer bin Abiyah, Ambassador of the Saudi Embassy in Dhaka, in the presence of important figures from the government and private sectors, senior officials of various embassies, university teachers, academicians, and media personalities.

Across the Kingdom, the day erupts with cultural festivals, historical exhibitions, traditional dress, and educational programs that showcase Najdi heritage, Ardah dances, and poetry recitals. From Riyadh’s Masmak Fortress to Diriyah’s UNESCO‑listed Turaif district, citizens and visitors experience immersive reenactments, craft markets, and night‑time light shows that blend ancient customs with contemporary art.

Founding Day’s rising profile aligns with Vision 2030, emphasizing heritage preservation, national pride, and global cultural outreach. As Saudi Arabia steps onto the world stage, this celebration reminds everyone that its rapid modernization rests on a deep, centuries‑old foundation.
