Diplomatic Desk: Canadian High Commissioner to Dhaka Ajit Singh yesterday met Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid at his office at the Secretariat here. During the meeting, the agriculture and livestock sectors of the two countries were discussed.

Amin said Canada is a long-time and trusted friend of Bangladesh. "There are excellent trade relations between the two countries. Bangladesh regularly imports fertilisers from Canada.

Bangladesh needs technical cooperation and advice in the agriculture and livestock sectors. Bangladesh would welcome any cooperation from Canada in this regard, he added. Regarding the potential for organic agriculture in Bangladesh, the minister informed the High Commissioner that the country's soil and climate are of good quality and suitable for agriculture. The government is planning to develop export-oriented agricultural production in the char areas of the country, he added.

If any private organisations in Canada wish to work jointly with private organisations in Bangladesh in this regard, the government will provide all possible cooperation, Amin said.

The High Commissioner said Canada's agriculture sector is highly developed, with a large part of the country used for agricultural production. Singh said his country is interested in exporting oilseeds, including canola, to Bangladesh.

Noting that Canada has deep ties with Bangladesh's agriculture sector, the High Commissioner said his country is always interested in cooperating in matters related to agricultural technology, research, technical cooperation, animal production and care.
