Customer's Bank Account Hacked in Bhola

Customer's Bank Account Hacked in Bhola

MA Mannan, Bhola: A complaint has been filed alleging that the entire salary of a customer was transferred to another account after his bank account at state-owned Rupali Bank was hacked in Daulatkhan Upazila of Bhola. The bank authorities have started an investigation based on the customer’s written complaint.According to bank sources, Golam Mawla, a lecturer in Bangla of Hajipur Kamil Madrasah, has a Teachers’ Savings Account with the Bank. When he went to the bank on March 2 to withdraw his salary, he found no money in his account. Having reviewed the account statement, Branch Manager Nesar Uddin said that Tk 26,760 was deposited on February 10 as his salary for January 2026. Later, on February 15, Tk 5,000 was transferred through the Bangladesh Electronic Funds Transfer Network (BEFTN). Afterwards, Tk 21,500 was sent to the same agent banking account of Pubali Bank in Gopalganj, leaving the account balance at zero.He said, “After receiving the complaint, the matter was reported to the IT department of Rupali Bank head office. Later, on March 8, an IT expert team from Dhaka came and conducted an investigation.”According to the preliminary observation of the IT department, the transactions were made using the customer’s mobile banking app, and SMS notifications were sent to his phone during each transaction. The investigation team also claimed that video call verification was done to confirm the transactions. The investigation further revealed that the money was transferred to a Pubali Bank agent banking account in Gopalganj owned by Brishti Ghosh. When contacted, she said, “Money regularly comes into my account and is withdrawn shortly after, but I do not know anything about this matter.”Bank officials said that fraudsters are collecting customers’ personal information through phishing links, call merging, screen sharing, fake offer messages, and QR code scams. In many cases, clicking on suspicious links sent through social media allows fraudsters to take control of the victim’s mobile phone, which is then used to access banking information and transfer money.Victim Golam Mawla claimed that he never used any mobile banking app and usually withdraws his salary through cheque. He also alleged that when he went to Daulatkhan Police Station to file a General Diary, police did not accept it and advised him to resolve the matter through the bank.

PSTC Highlights Women’s Empowerment on International Women’s Day

PSTC Highlights Women’s Empowerment on International Women’s Day

Special Correspondent: With a powerful message to advancing sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, and the leadership of women and young people. The organization highlighted the importance of gender equality as a fundamental right and essential for global progress, urging both individuals and communities to take swift and decisive action to address ongoing inequalities. PSTC reaffirmed its commitment in working for dignity, choice, and empowerment for all women and girls. The theme for Women’s Day 2026, “Give to Gain,” highlights a simple but powerful idea: when we invest in women’s rights, opportunities, and leadership, society as a whole benefits. Empowering women is not only about fairness; it is about strengthening families, workplaces, and communities. This theme calls for removing the systemic barriers and biases that still limit women’s progress in many areas of life. Whether at work, at home, or in society, real change requires conscious efforts to eliminate gender-based discrimination. “Give to Gain” also urges governments, organizations, and individuals to take meaningful steps to advance women’s rights and expand their participation in every sphere of life. By giving women equal space and opportunity, it is possible to gain a more inclusive, resilient, and prosperous society. PSTC has a long history of observing International Women’s Day both in its implementing areas and at the Head Office level. This year, on March 8, 2026, PSTC organized a discussion meeting at the Head Office, where staff members came together to reflect on the significance of the day. The meeting served as a platform for open dialogue about the rights of women and girls, the importance of gender equity, and the ongoing challenges posed by gender-based discrimination and violence.A keynote presentation addressed the current situation of Bangladeshi women within the broader socioeconomic context, highlighting the challenges they face in various sectors and discussing potential pathways for progress and empowerment. The presentation examined issues such as access to education, employment opportunities, social barriers, and gender inequality, while also emphasizing the importance of policy support, institutional reforms, and community engagement to create a more inclusive and equitable future for women in Bangladesh.Youth and the staff members shared their views on the current gender dynamics in society and explored strategies for addressing these challenges. They agreed that efforts to promote gender equality must start within the family unit, as social norms and values are often shaped by early socialization. They emphasized the role of parents, educators, and community leaders in fostering attitudes of equality and respect from a young age.Dr. Mahbubul Alam, Head of Programs of PSTC highlighted its ongoing work to empower women and girls through various community programs. By providing education, vocational training, and health services, PSTC has made significant strides in improving the lives of women and girls, equipping them with the tools they need to create brighter futures for themselves and their communities. Through these initiatives, PSTC aims to challenge harmful gender stereotypes, break down barriers to women’s participation, and create opportunities for all individuals to thrive, regardless of gender. Dr. Noor Mohammad, Executive Director said, PSTC reiterated its firm belief that gender equality is not just a women’s issue, but a societal one. By supporting initiatives that empower women and challenge discrimination at all levels, we can collectively work towards a more just and equitable world. The efforts of organizations like PSTC, alongside individuals and communities, are crucial in accelerating the journey towards a gender-equal society. Let us all continue to advocate for women's rights, recognize their contributions, and work tirelessly to ensure that every woman and girl can live in a world free of discrimination and violence.

Since 1989: Thousands of Women Martyred, Abused in IIOJK

Since 1989: Thousands of Women Martyred, Abused in IIOJK

Special Correspondent: As International Women’s Day is being observed worldwide today, the miseries and agonies of Kashmiri women continue unabated at the hands of Indian troops and police personnel in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Since the 1988 popular uprising, scholars and human rights organizations have consistently documented the use of rape as a weapon of war by Indian state forces, including the Indian Army, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Border Security Force (BSF). The deliberate and targeted nature of these crimes underscores the continuing pattern of oppression in IIOJK, where sexual violence remains a tool of subjugation and terror against the local population. After 1989, Indian forces selectively raped, tortured and killed Kashmiri Muslims and burnt their homes and business centers. Indian forces have committed rape as a form of retaliation against civilians who were demanding the right to self-determination under UN supervision. According to a 1993 Human Rights Watch (HRW) report, Indian forces used rape as a method of retaliation against Kashmiri civilians. Most rape cases, according to the report, occurred during cordon-and-search operations. In October 1992, representatives from the Asia Watch group and Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) traveled to Kashmir to document rape and other human rights abuses and violations of the laws of war by Indian forces. Later they released a book titled “Rape in Kashmir” on May 9, 1993. The report revealed that since January 1989, Indian state terrorism has rendered 22,991 women widowed, while 11,275 women were molested by Indian forces’ personnel. The report also reveals the devastating impact of Indian state terrorism on women in IIOJK. Since January 2001, at least 690 women have been martyred by Indian forces’ personnel. The report further pointed out that the majority of Kashmiris suffering from multiple psychological problems are women. The report cited some of the most heinous crimes committed against Kashmiri women, including the mass rape in Kunan-Poshpora, the rape and murder of Aasiya Jan and her sister-in-law Neelofar Jan in Shopian, and the rape and murder of 8-year-old Aasifa Bano in Kathua, each exposing the culture of impunity granted to the Indian forces establishment in the territory. The report said that thousands of women lost their sons, husbands, fathers and brothers in the occupied territory who were subjected to custodial disappearances by Indian troops. According to the Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons, 8,000 Kashmiris went missing in custody during the past 38 years, inflicting pain and agony on the womenfolk of the occupied territory. The report said that over three dozen Kashmiri women—including Hurriyat leaders Aasiya Andrabi, Fehmeeda Sofi and Naheeda Nasreen—languish in Indian and IIOJK jails, facing political persecution for championing Kashmiris’ right to self-determination. They are being politically victimized only because they represent the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and their demand for the right to self-determination, it added. The report highlighted the widespread use of pellet guns by Indian troops, leaving thousands of schoolchildren injured and blinding over 100, including 19-month-old Hiba Jan and 2-year-old Nusrat Jan. Four-year-old Zuhra Majeed was hit by pellets in her legs and abdomen after her family was targeted by Indian police outside their home in Qamarwari in Srinagar on July 10, 2016.
