Desk Riport: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami will hold a discussion meeting in the capital today (Tuesday) marking October 28 Paltan Tragedy Day.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 3:00pm at the Multipurpose Hall of the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB), in Dhaka. Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman MP will preside over the programme.
According to an invitation issued by the party, family members of those killed, people injured or left physically disabled in the incident, national leaders, senior figures from different political parties and leaders of professional organisations will address the meeting.
The events of October 28, 2006, in the capital's Paltan area remain a contentious chapter in Bangladesh's political history. Political clashes and violence that day resulted in casualties and have continued to feature prominently in political discourse and commemorative programmes.
The discussion meeting is expected to provide a platform for recalling the events of that day and highlighting the experiences of the victims and their families. Speakers may also address the broader consequences of political violence and the need to prevent such incidents in the future.
The programme comes amid continuing political debate over past episodes of violence, accountability and the protection of political rights.
Jamaat-e-Islami has requested media organisations to send a reporter and a photojournalist to cover the event and ensure its coverage in their respective outlets.
