MM Rahmatullah: In a significant diplomatic overture aimed at resetting bilateral relations, Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has formally invited Nitin Nabin, President of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), to visit Bangladesh.
The invitation was conveyed in New Delhi by Humayun Kabir, the Prime Minister's Foreign Affairs Adviser and Joint Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Kabir is currently on an official visit to India alongside Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman-their first such trip since the formation of the new government in Dhaka. During the visit, Kabir held meetings with senior BJP foreign affairs figures, including Vijay Chauthaiwale and Shishir Bajoria, a core committee member of the BJP's overseas wing. Bajoria is known for maintaining longstanding connections with both the BNP and its rival, the Awami League.
BJP leaders reiterated their respect for the democratic mandate of the Bangladeshi Public and expressed strong interest in forging a constructive relationship with the BNP-led administration-similar to their previous engagement with the Awami League government.
As a symbolic gesture, the BJP delegation presented Kabir with a copy of Why Bharat Matters, authored by India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Discussions between the two sides covered a broad spectrum of bilateral issues, including political cooperation, regional stability, and mutual security concerns.
A key issue raised by the BJP leadership was the matter of alleged anti-India insurgent activities that India has historically linked to past BNP administrations. Emphasizing the importance of regional security, BJP representatives underscored that such incidents must not be allowed to recur.
Responding to these concerns, Kabir assured his counterparts that the current Bangladeshi government is firmly committed to preventing any misuse of its territory for activities hostile to India. He reiterated Prime Minister Rahman's stance that Bangladesh will not permit its soil to be used for destabilizing neighboring countries.
Earlier in the visit, the Bangladeshi delegation held high-level meetings with key Indian officials, including National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
The invitation to the BJP chief and the ongoing diplomatic engagement signal a potential thaw in relations between Dhaka and New Delhi, marking what analysts describe as an effort to usher in a new chapter of cooperation between the two neighbors.
