Gazipur Bureau Office: The 4th founding anniversary of Gazipur Sangbadik Unity, one of the district’s active journalist organizations, was celebrated on Saturday, May 16, with a day-long program at the Gazipur Zila Parishad Auditorium.
The event brought together journalists from across the district, along with dignitaries, political leaders, law enforcement officials, and well-wishers, creating a festive atmosphere. Discussions centered on journalists’ professional dignity, safety, fair wages, and the need for unity.
Speakers highlighted long-standing grievances, job insecurity, and the demand for rights. Many said that while journalists act as the fourth pillar of the state and a mirror of society, a large number still lack fair remuneration, job security, and social recognition. Despite facing pressure and risks in pursuing the truth, they continue to carry out their duties, speakers noted.
Gazipur City Corporation Administrator Md. Shawkat Hossain Sarker attended as chief guest. The main discussant was Mohammad Taherul Haque Chouhan, Additional Police Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police.
“The realities of the state structure mean not everything is possible immediately. But for the sake of the country and the people, everyone must stay united,” Chouhan said. “Without specific information and evidence, no one can be brought under the law even if a case is filed. There’s no scope to misunderstand the police administration. Truthful and responsible journalism moves society forward.”
Special guests included Gazipur Superintendent of Police Md. Sharif Uddin’s representative Abul Bashar, Advocate Abdus Salam, Supreme Court lawyer and former Ward 40 Councilor Nazrul Islam Khan Biki, Ward 25 councilor candidate Md. Habibur Rahman Sarker, Azizul Mokshud Fakir, Gacha Thana BNP Organizing Secretary Shahin Mia, and journalists from _Dainik Sokal er Shomoy_, _Dainik Alokito Bangladesh_, Gazipur Central Press Club, and other media outlets.
In his presidential address, Gazipur Sangbadik Unity President Md. Akhtar Hossain gave an emotional speech on journalists’ rights.
“Many colleagues still don’t receive regular salaries. Countless journalists in electronic and print media live in hardship. To live with dignity with their families, government registration, job security, and a monthly pay structure for journalists are urgent,” he said. “We need practical policies for journalists’ welfare.”
He added that unity, not division, is journalists’ greatest strength, and urged members to act as friends, not adversaries, in upholding truth and justice.
The program was hosted by founding General Secretary Haiul Uddin Khan. Acting President Md. Jasim Uddin and Senior Vice President Md. Abu Salek Bhuiya also delivered welcome remarks.
After the discussion, the event continued with a reunion, lunch, greetings, and informal conversations.
Organizers said the program was meant to strengthen professional unity, mutual cooperation, and the commitment to truth among journalists. They pledged that Gazipur Sangbadik Unity would continue to play a leading role in the movement for journalists’ rights in the distric.
