Zakir Hossin: The Pirojpur Zila Parishad on Sunday launched a tree plantation programme as part of the government's nationwide initiative to plant 250 million trees over the next five years, aiming to promote environmental conservation and strengthen climate resilience.
The inaugural ceremony was held at the Zila Parishad premises, where Alamgir Hossain, a member of the BNP Central Executive Committee and Administrator of Pirojpur Zila Parishad, formally inaugurated the programme.
The event was attended by Sheikh Nurul Alam, Chief Executive Officer of the Zila Parishad, along with officials and employees of the local government body.
Speaking at the programme, Alamgir Hossain said large-scale tree plantation is essential to maintaining ecological balance and addressing the growing challenges posed by climate change. He said the plantation campaign would be implemented across Pirojpur district in phases under the five-year national initiative.
He also stressed that planting trees alone is not enough, emphasizing the importance of proper care and long-term conservation to ensure their survival.
"Only by protecting and nurturing the trees can we reap their environmental and social benefits," he said, calling on people from all walks of life to actively participate in the greening initiative.
Following the inauguration, participants planted saplings of various fruit-bearing, timber and medicinal tree species on the Zila Parishad premises as part of the opening day's activities.
